On the shores of Lake Michigan, the development of suburbia and skyscrapers was low but persistent. Though the devastating fire of 1871 grounded Chicago, it came back again and this time growth took pace every decade. By 1900, it crossed the mark of two million people.

Chicago is now the third largest city in the United States next to New York City and Los Angeles, California. Not only being the third largest city in the U.S, Chicago also ranks among the world's leading industrial and transportation centers

From what I have read, Chicago is nicknamed the windy city for different reasons. The first reason is that the Mayor of Chicago boasted so much about Chicago hosting the worlds fair, which implied the Mayor was windy. Another reason was that the politicians in the Chicago are full of hot air therefore implying the windy city. The last reason is that the editor of a newspaper was trying to promote Chicago as a summer resort and used Lake Michigan's summer breeze as a selling point. I do not know which of the reasons above gave Chicago its nickname the windy city but they all seem to make sense to me.

Chicago is also renowned for its excellent art institutions and museums, great food and great jazz music. If you have an appetite for sports, Chicago has the legendary Bulls, Bears, and Cubs, which are well known all over the world.

Part 1 Bali - the island of the gods!

At first visitor to Indonesia, I was excited and a little nervous. It is a huge country spread over thousands of miles. So, like India, and yet so unlike India, with its countless islands forming a chain along the equator.

Indonesia to me, it was a bit of a mixture incomprehensible remarkably beautiful tropical paradise and danger; with communal strife and civil unrest, volcanoes, tsunamis and earthquakes. During our trip, we hoped to find a fascinating reality that lies between these two themes.

The excitement is also the fact that we had a month to write the examination of these beautiful islands; active volcanoes in the home, beautiful beaches and unique wildlife, such as the Komodo dragon.

We started our journey into the relative comfort of the well-developed tourist infrastructure on the island of Bali. In fact one thing that is difficult is to try to obtain a reasonable price flight from New Delhi, as we left so late! Everything has finally worked uneventful and Malaysian airlines through flight later, in Kuala Lumpur, we landed at the airport in Denpasar, Bali. The landing was spectacular as the aircraft descends close to the white sand beach of Jimbaran, as you fly, what you can see the sea closer and closer to come up a few seconds before touchdown, the runway is suddenly visible.

Indonesia has recently relaxed its visa regime for Indians, it was possible to get a visa upon arrival - an Indian passport holder, it is still a new experience for travel to the country and get a visa upon arrival! Laos, Thailand, Hong Kong (curiously enough it requires a visa for China if), Cambodia and the Maldives are some of the others.

It was a hassle-free experience and we can immediately see the benefits it brings to tourism and business travel. This is all the more important in view of the Indian Tourism Board in its efforts to push a similar proposal for visitors across India.

Having pre-arranged some budget accommodation in the nearby seaside town of Sanur, we hired a taxi to get us there. Bali's excellent tourist infrastructure, made it an easy and painless process, we did not even need the Indonesian We were learning a language easier to learn than many.

Bali, appropriately called "Island of the Gods" is a prime example of religious and cultural diversity that exists in Indonesia, and consists mainly of Hindu communities. But the island of Java, where the capital is located in Jakarta, is predominantly Muslim and the island of Flores (where do we go after our trip) is mostly Christian.

The widespread islands with their mix of peoples, cultures and religions means that Indonesia has faced a problem similar to India in terms of language. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language but interesting has faced similar challenges in many parts of the country so that, with the adoption of Hindi as a national language in India. Indeed, in Bali, Balinese is widespread.

The Balinese worship different gods of Hindu mythology and that everyone is familiar with the Ramayana and the Mahabharatha that many Indians are. Each house is actually considered a minor temple, adding further to the amazing statistics about 20000 temples on this small island of more than two million people.

Offerings are made twice a day to the gods of the house and to the gods honored in the small shrines everywhere. As you drive around Bali, at the sight of women carrying rice and offerings of flowers on banana leaves is widespread. Indeed, the word Bali, dating from the 9th century, means "offering".

Sanur - quite unfairly nicknamed "snore 'Us - is a very sleepy town, which had begun to lose its charm, thanks to its efforts to pander all sorts of tourists. Our sense of discovery, lead us to search for the real Bali and us towards a small island, Nusa Lembongan, about two hours by boat.

Nusa Lembongan 3 is one of the islands that sit across the Badung Strait on the south coast of Bali, Nusa Ceningan with & Nusa Penida. 3 These islands are somewhat impoverished, based on seaweed farming, livestock and other low-yielding, with tourism the brightest light on the horizon. The boat ride through the Strait of Badung was good to begin with, but we had been warned, the Straits are very deep and there is always a large swell downtown finely illustrated by the girl sitting behind us step able to keep his breakfast Far fish!

Although we had to get off at the main pier, we composed our minds to make our way of Mushroom Bay, a stunning white sand beach that we had spotted from the boat. Getting there meant either taking a small but expensive boat taxi, or walking with our heavy bags and down for a couple of hours.

We have devoted this time to explore the island and the first time decided to make a walking tour. Incredibly greenery, and some beautiful beaches, were our reward after some time although the humidity makes walking more effort than we would have liked. And, of course, the temples and offerings were everywhere.

The next day, we decided to explore a little further by hiring a motorcycle with my courageous woman (she says!) Accepting rolling pillion. The roads are not very big and steep in places, but we set off off. It is difficult to lose your way around the island and we on the other side of the island, stopping off to admire the views and when stopped by inquisitive children-friendly.

Our plan was to visit the two other nearby islands, where possible, and said that we could ride our bikes on a narrow bridge. The bridge was indeed close, but what worries us even more is the approach ramp - a small miscalculation of a few centimeters, and the likelihood is that we would miss the bridge and land in the ocean. As if not brave adventurers, we decided that I try alone without my passenger. Success!

Driving through Nusa Ceningan, it was evident that the island was much poorer than Nusa Lembongnan, but the difference is tourism. Residents of the province of Nusa Ceningan survived mainly through agriculture and sea weed when the trade did not go well, they have a difficult life.

We stopped at a place where there was clearly planned to build a resort. Most of the structure and presentation were in place, but now had been left to rot. As we were enjoying the views and thinking how wonderful it would be to resurrect the resort, and it is always possible, a man appeared from behind buildings and venues. Suddenly, we were concerned that the intrusion and that there was no other soul in sight, we tried to apologize and leave. Your third day could be a Cruise on the Bosphorous assuming it is a Saturday or a Sunday, and on your last day visit the Archaelogical Museums, the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts, the Egyptian market or take the ferry over the Bosphorous and back again allowing you to say you have been on two different continents on the same day!!

Istanbul is like that, being two quite different continents in one, and just a perfect choice for a romantic weekend city break getaway.

Apart from the game drives, you can also have bush dinners, sundowners at Observation Hill, private picnics, lunch boxes, personal game drives. There are also daily guided nature and bird spotting walks through the grounds of Amboseli Serena Lodge with the resident naturalist, plus daily lectures on aspects of the Maasai culture.

Importantly there is full medical back up and emergency evacuation facilities.

Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge is just one of a group of Serena Safari Lodges, but is ideally situated for game viewing. The waters in Thailand have one of the richest and diverse marine life in the world because conditions here for coral growth is almost perfect with an average temperature of 28C all year round and fantastic underwater visibility.

The Gulf of Thailand has hundreds of islands on its 1,840km (1,143 miles) long coast. The gulf is a shallow bowl shaped body of water separated from the South China Sea by a pair of underwater ridges that extend from Vietnam on one side and Malaysia to the other.

The Andaman Sea was already thriving thousands of years ago with Chinese, European, Thai and Indian trading vessels plying its waters. Today, the Andaman Sea is more of a playground for dive boats and sailing yachts rather than for trading vessels.

One of the better known playgrounds for divers in the Andaman and is often rated amongst the top scuba diving destinations in the world are the Similan Islands. Divers can explore Similan, the Surin Islands and the Mergui Archipelago in liveaboard diving cruises.

Thailand's Andaman Sea stretches 870km (541 miles) from Tarutao National Park on the border of Malaysia to the Surin Islands on the border of Myanmar (formerly known as Burma). It is part of the Indian Ocean and is separated from the Bay of Bengal by the Andaman-Nicobar Ridge. Quaint formations of granite outcrops can be senn in the Surin and Similan Islands.

Other island groups such as Koh Phi Phi are shaped by massive limestone and calcium carbonates since prehistoric time.

There are a lot of misconceptions related to travel insurance, and understandably most people aren’t as well versed in the fine details of travel insurance as I am – I can’t say that I blame them! However, many misconceptions put people at risk of spending unnecessary amounts of money on areas that could and should be covered by their travel insurance policy.

So, I’ve compiled this mini travel insurance FAQ to assist those who have doubts, worries or questions about travel insurance.

Q: What should I do before going abroad?

A: Make sure you have adequate travel insurance and that you have checked the FCO Travel Advice for the countries you are visiting. Check you have sufficient money and that your passport is up-to-date. Take a photocopy of your passport details and keep in a safe place. Check what inoculations and visas are required. Note down the numbers and addresses of the UK embassy and consulate in the country you’re traveling to.

Q: Should I take out travel insurance before my holiday?

A: I may be a little biased on this one, but yes! It is extremely important that you take out adequate travel insurance even for short trips or visits to Europe, and absolutely imperative in countries outside the EU where different conditions make illness more likely and affordable medical cover that bit more difficult to get hold of. It also covers for cancellation as soon as you book your trip.

If you travel to a country, or part of a country, against FCO advice, it is unlikely that your insurer would meet any claim, however. Should the FCO advice change after you have booked a holiday, check the position with your tour operator and travel insurance company.

Q: Should I be looking at single trip or annual multi trip travel insurance?

A: Only you can answer that really – although single trip insurance is (generally) cheaper, it does exactly what it says and covers you for just the one trip. By contrast, annual multi trip travel insurance will cover you for the whole year on various breaks, making it the choice if you think you’re likely to travel that much. You may find that just taking two trips a year would make annual multi trip travel insurance cheaper than the single trip variety!

Q: What sort of reason for cancellation is valid to ensure cover from travel insurance?

A: As long as your reason is within the scope of cover provided by your insurance, then you should be entitled to claim in most cases. Legitimate reasons for canceling your trip could include an illness or death in the family (as defined by your policy), freak weather conditions suspending travel for 24 hours, burglary or damage to your home, being a victim of criminal assault resulting in you being medically unable to travel, being called up for emergency military service or jury duty (subject to the specific terms and conditions of the policy). Likewise, if the hotel or resort (for independent travelers) you’re due to visit suffers from a terrorist attack in the days leading up to your travel, you will generally be able to claim.

Q: Who pays if I need to be hospitalized overseas or flown back to the UK?

A: If you have proper travel insurance, the insurance company should pay such fees. If not, the cost will fall to you or your relatives and friends.

Q: Is a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) the same as health insurance?

A: No. The free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) shows that the holder is entitled to reduced or free emergency care only within the EU. You will still need travel insurance to ensure you will be covered fully in the event of illness or injury. The EHIC card will help though, by reducing your initial outlay before you can be reimbursed by your travel insurance company.

Q: Is my pre existing medical condition a big issue?

A: Generally, yes. Check the wording of your policy to ensure it covers pre-existing medical conditions. Often they’re not covered unless you pay an extra premium, and if you fail to declare your condition when you buy the travel insurance, you’ll be unable to claim on it. As always the key advice here is to check the policy wording with a fine tooth comb.

Q: How can I find out whether it is safe to travel to a particular country?

A: It is strongly advised that you check the FCO Travel Advice section of their website (fto.gov.uk). This information is regularly updated and should give you solid advice on where is and is not safe to travel (remember, areas officially outlined as ‘unsafe’ will seldom be covered by travel insurance policies).

Q: Is it safe to travel after a terrorist attack overseas?

A: Unfortunately, there is no such thing as risk-free travel, and the absence of advice against travel to a particular country or area does not imply that the FCO guarantees safety in that country or area.

‘Barefoot Romance on one of the best beaches in the Indian Ocean’ - This is how the Trou aux Biches has been described on many occasions, and it’s difficult to disagree! The hotel was established as one of the first luxury hotels in Mauritius, and therefore has one of the best locations. The chalet style accommodation are scattered throughout the gardens facing the Indian Ocean. Each of the Mauritian Chalets houses three or four individual hotel rooms.

All of the bedrooms, apartments, and suites have private bathrooms with bathtub, shower and wc. There are 127 standard rooms, all set in intimate tiled or thatched Mauritian Chalets with spacious bedrooms and terrace or balconies. They are 30 sq m in size
There are 23 superior rooms, on the ground floor, and 31 on the first floor, again they have spacious bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms with separate showers with terraces or balconies which face towards the ocean.

The type of accommodation at the Trou aux Biches which really shines are the suites. They are split level, and located close to the beach. The suites all have very large bathrooms and dressing areas, and en suite bedrooms upstairs, and a large private balcony offering unrivaled views. Downstairs there is a terrace, spacious sitting and dining room, plus a kitchenette. The most luxurious element is your valet who will tend your needs and requirements, offering the most personal of services. There are only 3 of these suites, so early booking is advised, and they are all an impressive 110sq m in size.

Finally the two bedroom family apartments are ideally located on the ground floor, in the center of the resort. There is a large master bedroom with sitting area, and a big ensuite bathroom with separate shower. The children’s bedroom has an en suite shower room and a lockable entrance for a babysitter if required. They can accommodate 2 adults and 3 children.

There are three restaurants at Trou aux Biches, all offering a unique atmosphere and menu. La Caravelle is the hotels main restaurant, and has fabulous views of the Indian Ocean. It serves buffet style dining, with cooking stations for breakfast and dinner. L’Oasis is the pool side restaurant with unbeatable ocean views. In the evening the restaurant is lit by candlelight giving romantic warmth. Continental breakfast, a la carte lunch and dinner are served at this restaurant.

Finally L’Espandon is located right on the beach for ‘feet in the sand dining’. The specialities are fresh seafood and lunch and dinner are served. There are two bars located at L’Oasis and La Caravelle restaurants.

If you are looking for a little pampering, Le Lotus Wellness Center offers sauna, massage, hairdresser and beautician. It’s quite small though so pre booking is advisable.

If you are looking for a little more adrenaline during your stay at a luxury hotel in Mauritius, the Trou aux Biches has a number of activities at hand. There are 3 tennis courts, table tennis, volleyball and bocciball. Mountain bikes are available to hire and there is also a gym. There is an excellent range of free water sports including water-skiing, windsurfing, sailing, glass bottom boat trips, snorkeling trips, glass bottom boat, kayaks and pedal boats. Deep sea fishing and scuba diving are also available at an extra charge.
